After signing the 21-year-old Ecuadorian midfielder Moisés Caicedo, who agreed on an eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge worth €135 million, Chelsea FC not only broke the previous Premier League`s transfer record but also jumped high above other clubs in total transfer spending.

Chelsea Spent €385M in Summer Transfer Window, After Splashing €611.5M in Season 2022/23
Caicedo`s signing for the Blues helped Chelsea to rank as Premier League`s biggest spender in the 2023/24 season after already going on an unstoppable shopping spree in 2022/23.
However, splashing the cash on new players didn`t help The Blues to improve their field performance. The club finished the last season 12th in the Premier League, the first ranking in the bottom half of the league table in the past thirty years.
The fact that Chelsea spent the season under four different managers also didn’t help. Mauricio Pochettino overtook the club at the end of the season, and his first move was to trim the Chelsea squad. Arsenal ranked second with nearly €235 million spent in the 2023/24 summer transfer window. Statistics show the club spent €594 million on transfers in the last three seasons or 88% less than Chelsea. Manchester United is the third-largest spender, with almost €577 million spent on signing new players in three seasons. Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Liverpool FC follow, with €467 million, €410 million, and €355 million transfer spending in this period.
Chelsea Spent €1.1B on Signing New Players and Earned Only €471.6M Through Player Sales
The TransferMarkt data also showed England`s top-flight clubs spend far more money on signing new players than they earn from selling them. As the biggest spender in the Premier League in the past three years, Chelsea also has the worst transfer balance of -€643 million. While the club spent over $1.1bn on signing new players, they earned only $471.6 million through player sales.
Statistics show Arsenal has the second-largest negative transfer balance among the six clubs of -€504.9 million. Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool FC follow, with negative transfer balances of -€484.3 million, -€282.4 million, and €184.5 million, respectively.
The TransferMarkt data also showed Manchester City has the smallest negative transfer balance among the six clubs of €114.5 million. Over the past three years, the club spent €410.5 million on signing new players and earned €295.9 million through player sales.
