For the past six years, Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription game service has been far ahead of its competitors, both in the number of users and the available game library.
According to data presented by CasinosEnLigne.com, PlayStation Plus Premium has the biggest game library of all available subscription game services, with 730 games, 60% more than Xbox Game Pass and seven times more than Nintendo Switch Online.
PS Plus Premium Has 270 More Games than Xbox Game Pass
Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription game service, initially created to sell online gaming access, underwent a significant change in June last year. Still called PS Plus, it has become Sony’s version of Xbox Game Pass, offering three subscription models. The existing service became PlayStation Plus Essential, while higher-priced tiers, PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium, add access to downloadable and streamable titles previously available under PlayStation Now.
These changes were not generally well received at launch, as the PS Plus subscriber count dipped to its lowest figure since September 2020 before recovering in the first months of 2023. Nevertheless, the service still has the highest number of users, around 47.5 million worldwide. That is 11 million more than Nintendo Switch Online and almost double the user count of Xbox Game Pass, its biggest competitor, which has around 25 million subscribers.
Although Microsoft has been acquiring gaming studios left and right over the past years and aggressively expanding the Game Pass game catalog, the service is still far behind PS Plus when talking about the total number of available games.
According to Statista data, the PS Plus Premium service offers 270 more games to its subscribers than Xbox Game Pass, which has the second-largest game library. PC Game Pass ranked third on this list, with 439 available games. PlayStation Plus Extra closely follows, with 400 games in its library. Nintendo Switch Online ranked fifth, with only 100 games.
Around 30% of PS Plus Subscribers Choose Higher-Priced Extra or Premium Tiers
Most PS Plus users named online multiplayer and monthly free games gifted to subscribers as the key reasons for using the service, which doesn’t surprise considering the retail value of free games offered to PS Plus Essential subscribers amounted to over $1,300 last year.
Still, around 30% of all PS Plus users are willing to pay more to get access to an even bigger number of games. The Statista and Sony data show that 6.1 million PS Plus subscribers use the PlayStation Plus Extra tier, and another 8 million the PlayStation Plus Premium tier. Most subscribers, or roughly 33 million, use the Essential subscription model.
